Personally, I thought this was pretty good but I review this in a professional capacity and as such must keep that in mind):(As a warning I want to make it clear I review this with my professional hat on not personal. The hip-hop artist will perform the musical soundtrack to ‘Visions’, which is a semi-autobiographical magical realist story. I will be back in the UK in February, getting ready to release a new album next year, probably part 2 at the next Comic Con, with Part 3 coming this time next year. I have just finished Akala’s debut YA novel and was blown away by this story. BAFTA and MOBO Award-winning hip-hop artist Akala, who debuted at this year’s MCM Comic Con Expo, to perform his graphic novel, Visions live, certainly seems to fit that profile. Akala presents ‘The Ruins Of Empires’ -- an epic poem. However, the lady herself didn't play much of a role in this story, and I'm assuming a sequel will come.I was interested to read The Dark Lady because of the author, Akala. 10 Years Of Akala Triple Vinyl $45.99. The language also felt inconsistent. I recommend checking out Akala's 4th fire in the booth after which he recites/raps most of chapter 3 - the killing fields to music. Akala and Oxford University Press Presents - Hip & Hop: You Can Do Anything Children's Book $9.99. The only real issue I had was, unfortunately, with the magic - Henry has the ability to translate any language written on paper, a feat that - as far as the many European characters are concerned - is something wholly unique and unheard of before. Whereas in the graphic novel space, even though they’re not cheap to make, they’re not 20 million pounds, so to a certain degree you can have complete artistic freedom. Set in Shakespearian London, ‘The Dark Lady’ will appeal to anyone who loves to be swept away by powerful words and stunning story telling. Akala; visions; graphic novel; comic con; Visions is the first in a new series of graphic novels being released by the rapper, as he continues to spread his far-reaching influence across music, literature and politics.
Akala’s message about society, race and identity is so important and will identify with a lot of teenagers (even with a magical realist-Renaissance London backdrop)- and should be revered and praised for its heart and tenacity. I am a massive Akala fan and recently finished Natives: Race and Class in the Ruins of the Empire, so I was geeked to see the email that popped up with mentions of this book. *Thank you to NetGalley and Hachette Childrens for sending me a digital ARC for review**Thank you to NetGalley and Hachette Childrens for sending me a digital ARC for review*The world is a bit too classic for my taste - maybe because I was expecting a fantasy novel. I didn’t feel ‘mum’ would be used, but maybe that’s just me!I wanted to like this more but I didn't warm to the main character terribly well. From his lyrics to his books to his theatre company, the Londoner fuses together the eloquent language of William Shakespeare with the often blunt realities of hip hop. was introduced to me by a friend; he originally designed an album cover for me, again, as a deluxe edition, in a proper graphic novel format, because we’re working on a few things, that will make it viable and worthwhile. It doesn't feel like a standalone. It took me a little while to get to grips with the Elizabethan slang, which I felt was a rather fun and authentic touch once you settled into it. I went to see an early spoken performance of the main story in this graphic novel in December 2014 which was phenomenal. On the surface, this book seemed to offer everything I like: Shakespeare, pickpockets, references to Moll Cutpurse, and Elizabethan London.
