Intertwined with Harry's story we see that things aren't going well in the country; there are riots in the capital, the government is on the brink of collapse and there are allegations that the Prime Minister has been involved in some sort of financial irregularity. It was good to see David Suchet out of his "Poirot" skin for a while, although I had hoped to see more of a role for him. He had once been the driver for an apparent armed robbery where the householder was killed along with two policemen. When Harry tells scared Stevie Quirk in prison: "You give me a call when you decide you want to tell me what the fuck is going on," I'm shouting at the telly: "Yeah, me too Stevie, you give me a call and tell me what the fuck is going on and all. And the dialogue in this is great – these people talk like real people talk.So my only tiny problem is that I'm not entirely sure what's going on. David Suchet, Philip Glenister are usually very good, not in this.

Cut, first to a brown Mercedes driving fast along a country lane. Lots of zig-zagging with background details throughout the four episodes but details like the laptop with the "help desk" information and the death of Gina's lawyer parents don't get connected in the end to vindicate Harry with the authorities. Hidden 3D *contains spoilers* Hidden 3D, a 2011 movie based on an old building underneath which lays a mad-woman's laboratory, although technically it should be called a torture room. Over the course of the series Harry and Gina must try to find out what is going on and stop the villains from achieving their ultimate goal without being killed. Was this review helpful? and that's Mr Venn Sr ID-ing him, Harry's the getaway driver in a previous criminal life, and the distinguished-looking chap is presumably the scientist who gets murdered. Glenister is fabulous as Harry, who has something of Raymond Chandler's Philip Marlowe about him – a big tough guy, and a shagger, but also self-destructive and vulnerable. BBC Wales and S4C's crime thriller Hidden has made its bilingual debut, after its Welsh run as Craith, and is worth discovering.

This miniseries requires constant attention. Bloody hell, and that's all in the first two minutes of Ronan Bennett's four-part conspiracy thriller In the present, Harry Venn (Philip Glenister), a solicitor with an eye for a pretty lady and a nose for a line of cocaine, is visited by a pretty lady. People getting killed some kind of conspiracy, more people getting killed, the end. I think it was just one of many hits by the "Help Desk", and it got Venn and his brother into the story. A distinguished looking chap – not WB082019, I don't think – looks enigmatically out of the window at a lake. It seems ideal, he hasn't got much, living in a run-down room alone and suddenly out of nowhere he gets a huge, isolated house with which he can do pretty much … Granted, Harry's brother called and said get rid of Gina's phone. This is a far more interesting and real character than his cartoonish cliche-shouting Gene Hunt.
