That sounds like a good project idea and you might be able to make it with this or similar sensor and setup. You are probably not getting any value from the sensor. Also, the segment from point 0 and 10 cm is much bigger then segments between 10-20, 20-30 and 30-40. In Linux, however, you get nullpointexceptions regularly from the tyyACM port.
