The film combines, not always successfully, the modern film with archive film of the actual events. He has said that the film bears little resemblance to his novel or the characters in it. This was a brilliantly-acted film by Daniel Day-Lewis, Lena Olin and Juliette Binoche that was centered around the Czech uprising (and subsequent Russian invasion of Czechoslovakia) in the late 1960's.
She was younger than we know her from her later work, as was Daniel Day-Lewis, who plays Tomas with perfect pitch. There are also elements that defy credence, specifically that the character of Tomasz (Day-Lewis) appears to possess the mesmeric power of inducing women to remove all their clothes by simply saying, "Take off your clothes" (tip to guys: try this line at your peril).
The Unbearable Lightness of Being is one of those occasional attempts by American filmmakers to make a European arthouse movie in English, in this case taking on an `unfilmable' novel and trying to solve the problem of turning inner monologue into a credible narrative. This is entertaining, but it doesn't quite capture the elegance and philosophy of the original book. One day Tomas is sent to a spa town for an operation and he meets the kind and sweet Tereza (Juliette Binoche). I wish the music was more subtle, romantic, and erotic like the film. Three terrific stars and a great supporting cast, plus a great production team make this film better than its screenplay.
