For the most part, you can't fool kids, and Mac's gruff behavior did not fool Buster. Her father Macauley (Brian Brown) was the protagonist with most of the scenes, which for in their plurality depicted an egocentric person, more concerned about maintaining his "independence" than with his daughter's welfare. She was winning his heart and he already had her heart. Really tastefully done even with certain subject matter. Loved watching years ago so I had to buy it again! With a young child as his responsibility, he finds he can't be quite the fancy-free wanderer that he had been. After nursing Buster back to health, Mac turns vagabond once again, with Buster weighing him down more heavily than ever.

But when he faces the prospect of losing his daughter either to death or to the vengeful Marge, Mac is forced to make the most difficult decision of his life. This film fully deserves 5 stars for the storyline, the superb acting, the period setting, and most of all for little Rebecca Smart. Together they befriend a number of colorful characters and Lily (Noni Hazelhurst, Little Fish), a lovely rancher as maddeningly willful as Mac.

Try and keep a dry eye when she asks for her gooby.

I thought I was going to be bored...it isn't a fast moving film, but if you ever had to raise a daughter or had a friend who could not settle down you will find yourself slowly being drawn into the drama....and feel a lot of emotions. Foul language. Mac really didn't want to be a daddy and acted like he didn't care much about anything.

I love all the main characters - they really brought out all the hard times during that period of time in the Outback. So glad I stumpled onto this sweet little movie. An itinerant rural worker named Macauley —sometimes described as a "swagman" or "swaggie"—suddenly finds himself taking responsibility for his child. He's a laid back, laconic sort of bloke but when he gets landed with his daughter after his drunken play-girl wife in Adelaide makes him face up to what she believes are his responsibilities, neither he nor his daughter are ready for each other.
