Beautifully written. I loved the honesty and the fact the poems are integrated so naturally into her story of motherhood so far. So honest, so easy to relate to, so encouraging. Not everything spoke to me, particularly the bits about teen moms (I don't think that stigma is as bad in the US, perhaps). I don't usually like poetry that much but cannot recommend this book enough. How her family and friends would react; that Mr Whippy would be off the menu; how quickly ice can melt on a stomach. I would read this book while putting my son to sleep and it made me feel even more thankful for him. You don't have to want or have children to want to be able to empathise, understand and learn about parenthood and Hollie makes this collection so personal and so honest you are immediately swept away by her. I received it as a gift and came on here today to purchase for a friend; was sad to see it's only available used/via third parties since it's one of my favorite books ever. This is the first time I've ever reviewed a book, it's that good. I love her way of thinking and her vision of the world, and deeply respect her recognition of the male influence in a child's life (us Dad's are often overlooked). For the first time since becoming a mother I felt seen and understood by a piece of writing. An ever so clever, hard hitting and funny insight into life but light hearted at the same time. As a poet, she relishes the joy of language - loved the 'patient' / 'patient' moment in one of her diary extracts - I love language just as much as Little One!
